Uline was founded in 1980 when Liz and Richard Uihlein started the company from their basement. Its first product was the H-101 carton sizer. In 1980, after recognizing a local need for a shipping supply distributor, Liz and Dick Uihlein started Uline from their basement. Their first product was the H-101 carton sizer (still offered today). It sold well and encouraged the Uihleins to add more products to the catalog the following year.

Uline CEO Richard Uihlein has been a Republican donor for decades, and increased his political giving after Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Uihlein has supported conservative groups and candidates including Ted Cruz, The Club for Growth, and the Illinois Policy Institute. Uihlein is also a major donor to Americas PAC, Scott Walker, and Bruce Rauner. However, in 2018, Uihlein funded political advertisements harshly critical of Rauner and supporting Jeanne Ives, who ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary in the 2018 Illinois gubernatorial election, narrowly losing to incumbent Governor Bruce Rauner. Uihlein contributed nearly $1.5 million to Tea Party Patriots in 2016.
